Picture this. A person trying to haul a heavy crate up onto a roof, using just a rope. Their face is red, their arms are shaking. Now picture the same person, lifting the same crate, but this time the rope runs through a little wheel up top. They're barely working. Same load. Same body. What's the trick?

Here's the first kind. A fixed pulley — it's just a wheel with a groove, bolted to a beam up top. The rope rides in the groove and the wheel spins freely. When you pull DOWN on one end, the other end goes UP. That's it. The force you need is exactly the same as lifting straight up — but now you can use your body weight to pull down, which feels way easier.

Now flip the whole thing upside down. The TOP of the rope is tied to the beam. The pulley itself hangs in the middle, and the weight is clipped to the pulley. Now look — there are TWO strands of rope holding the weight up. The left one tied to the beam, the right one going to your hand. Each strand carries HALF the load. So you only need half the force. But here's the catch — you have to pull twice as much rope.

Now here's where it gets clever. Combine fixed and movable pulleys together and you get something called a block and tackle. Count the rope strands holding the load — that number IS your mechanical advantage. Four strands? You only need a quarter of the force. Six strands? A sixth. On old sailing ships, four sailors could haul up a thousand-pound cannon — because the rope wound through pulleys six or eight times.

Okay, your turn. Pick a pulley setup — from no pulley at all, all the way up to a six-strand compound. Then drag the rope to lift the 400-pound weight. Watch the numbers. As mechanical advantage goes up, your force drops — but the rope you have to pull gets longer. Work done stays exactly the same. That's energy conservation, doing its quiet thing.

Once you know what to look for, pulleys are everywhere. Construction cranes lift steel beams with block and tackle. Elevators hang on cables that ride over pulleys with a counterweight on the other side. Sailboats have ropes running through dozens of pulleys — sailors call them blocks. Gym cable machines, window blinds with a pull cord, even the line on a flagpole. Anywhere humans trade strength for rope.

So that's the whole thing. A pulley is just a wheel with a groove. Each strand of rope holding the load shares the weight. The more strands, the less force you need — but you have to pull more rope. It's the same trade-off every simple machine makes. Trade strength for rope. Save your back.
