Look at this line-up. A giant cargo ship, lumbering along. A speedboat, leaping over the waves. A boat that looks like it's actually flying above the water. And one gliding straight off the sea and up onto the beach. Every single one of these is a boat. So here's the puzzle for our whole finale: if they all do the same job — carry people across water — why on earth do they look NOTHING alike?

To solve the puzzle, meet the enemy. Every boat is fighting the same thing — drag. The water's resistance. And water is heavy. About eight hundred times denser than air. Waving your hand through air? Easy. Through water? You really feel it shove back. So here's the key idea: the more hull you drag through the water, the more drag you make. The whole game, for every boat shape, is one question — how much do you fight the water?

Strategy one is the oldest and the calmest. The displacement hull. It rides down in the water and just shoves it aside as it moves — the same displacement idea from our very first video. It's wonderfully steady and sips fuel, which is why every giant cargo ship works this way. But there's a catch. Go faster and the boat piles up a bigger and bigger wave at its bow — and then it's basically trying to climb up its own wave. It gets stuck behind it. Sailors call that limit hull speed.

Strategy two: stop fighting the water — climb out of it. A planing hull has a flat or V-shaped bottom. At low speed it just plows like a displacement boat. But pour on the power, and the water pressure under that flat bottom shoves the whole hull UP. It pops up onto the surface and starts to skim, throwing spray everywhere. Now only a thin slice of hull is touching the water, so the drag drops and — whoosh — it's a speedboat.

Strategy three is my favourite, and it's a callback. Remember how a sail is really a wing that makes lift? A hydrofoil puts little wings — foils — down underwater. Move fast enough and those foils make lift, the same way an airplane wing does, just in water instead of air. And that lift is so strong it raises the entire hull clean out of the water. Now nothing's touching the sea except two thin little foils and their struts. The drag almost disappears, and the boat practically flies.

Strategy four is the wildest: don't touch the water at all. A hovercraft has a big fan that blows air straight down. Around the bottom is a floppy rubber skirt that traps that air, building up a cushion of high-pressure air underneath. And that cushion is strong enough to lift the whole craft right off the surface. Here's the magic part — it isn't touching water OR land. So it doesn't care which is underneath. It glides off the sea, straight up the beach, and keeps going. Amphibious.

One bonus shape before we wrap up. The catamaran. Instead of one wide hull pushing aside loads of water, it uses two skinny hulls, set far apart. Each slim hull slices through with very little drag — and spreading them wide makes the boat really hard to tip. So you get the best of both worlds: low drag AND rock-solid stability. Clever, right?

Now you drive. Pick a hull — displacement, planing, hydrofoil, or hovercraft — and push the throttle. Watch the displacement boat hit its speed wall while the others climb up out of the water. Keep an eye on the hull-wetted number: the less hull in the water, the less drag, the faster it goes. Each shape is just a different answer to the same question: how much do you fight the water?

And that ties our whole series together. Buoyancy is what holds a boat up. A propeller or a sail is what pushes it forward. And the shape of the hull? That decides how hard it has to fight the water. Plowing through it, skimming on top of it, flying above it on little wings, or hovering over it on a cushion of air.
