Sailing Into the Wind
Sailboats can sail almost STRAIGHT toward the wind. The sail is a wing, and the keel is the trick.

Watch this sailboat. The wind is blowing almost straight AT it — and yet it's slicing forward, climbing toward the wind. Now think about a leaf in front of a fan. It just blows away, right? Wind pushes things downwind. So how on earth is this boat sailing the wrong way — toward the wind it's fighting?
Let's start with the easy case — the one everybody guesses right. Put the wind behind the boat. The sail fills up and bellies out, like a parachute or a big balloon. The wind just shoves on it, and the boat runs away downwind. Simple pushing. Hold onto this picture — because what happens next is NOTHING like it.
But now turn the boat so the wind comes from the side, and trim the sail in tight. Something completely different happens. The sail stops being a baggy parachute and becomes a smooth, curved WING — standing straight up. Watch the wind bend around its curve. That bending makes a force called LIFT, the exact same force that holds up an airplane. A sail is just a wing turned on its side.
Now, here's the tricky part. That lift force doesn't point where you want to go. Most of it points SIDEWAYS — straight off the side of the boat. Only a little bit of it points FORWARD. Let's split the lift into two arrows: a big sideways one, and a small forward one. If that's all there was, the boat would mostly just slide sideways. So why doesn't it?
The answer is hiding underwater. It's called the keel — a thin, deep fin sticking down beneath the boat. Think about a knife in water. Push it along its edge and it slides easily. Push it sideways and the water fights back, hard. The keel is exactly that. So that big sideways pull? The keel cancels it. The boat barely slips sideways at all. And what's left over — the little forward push — has nothing stopping it. So the boat squirts forward.
There's still one place a sailboat can't go: straight into the wind. Point within about forty-five degrees of dead upwind and the sail can't make a smooth wing anymore — it just flaps like a flag. No lift, no go. Sailors call that being in irons. So how do you get to something that's directly upwind? You cheat the angle. You sail forty-five degrees off to one side, then turn and sail forty-five degrees off the other — zig-zagging your way up. That's called tacking.
Now you take the helm. The wind is blowing straight down the screen. Use the first slider to steer the boat, and the second to trim the sail in or out. Try pointing straight up into the red zone — feel the boat stall, in irons. Then bear away and trim until the speed bar lights up green. See if you can find the fastest setting of all: a beam reach, with the wind coming right across the side.
So here's the whole secret in one breath. A sail is a wing — bending wind makes lift. That lift points mostly sideways, but the keel refuses to slide, so only the forward part is left, and the boat squirts ahead. You can't aim straight into the wind, so you zig-zag your way up. But wait — with the wind shoving the sail and the boat leaning over like that... why doesn't it just tip over? That's next.
