Pause for a second and think about this. Your kitchen is around seventy degrees. Inside the fridge, it's forty. But the fridge is plugged in — it's running on electricity, which makes heat. So you're plugging in something hot, and it makes things colder. That shouldn't even be possible.

Here's the trick that makes it all work — there is no such thing as making cold. Cold isn't a substance. What a fridge actually does is grab heat that's inside, and shove it out the back. That's why if you feel behind your fridge, the air there is warm. That warmth used to be inside your milk.

Inside the walls of every fridge there's a closed-up loop of pipes — sealed, never leaks. And in that loop swims a fluid we call refrigerant. What makes it special? It boils at twenty-five degrees BELOW zero. So even when your kitchen feels chilly to you, this fluid is screaming hot — and it boils into gas, again and again, all day long.

Watch the four-stop journey. Stop one — inside the fridge, the refrigerant is a freezing liquid, and your warm food boils it into gas. That's how it sucks heat out. Stop two — the compressor squeezes that gas hard, which makes it hot. Stop three — those hot coils on the back release the heat into your kitchen. Stop four — a tiny valve sprays the fluid back through, super cold, ready to absorb again. Same fluid, endless loop.

Here's a cool thing — out of the four stops, only one of them actually needs electricity. The compressor. That's just a little motor that squeezes the gas. Everything else — the boiling, the cooling, the condensing — is just physics happening for free, the same way a puddle dries up on a sunny day.

So here's the whole picture. A fridge doesn't make cold — it pumps heat out. Absorb. Squeeze. Release. Expand. Forever. That cold air you feel inside is just an empty space where the heat used to be. And that heat? It's right behind the fridge, warming up your kitchen.
