Okay, think about this for a second. You press the little lever, the water swirls around, and in like two seconds the whole bowl is empty. Where did all that water actually go? And why does it always work?
Most kids — and most grown-ups, honestly — think a toilet is just a fancy drain. But watch your sink for a second. The sink only drains as fast as water can fall through that little hole. A toilet doesn't trickle. It empties itself in two seconds flat. Something different is happening inside.
Here's the hidden trick — let's slice the toilet open and peek inside. See that curved pipe tucked behind the bowl? That's the siphon. It opens off the back of the bowl, goes UP, over a little peak we call the weir, then DOWN behind everything into the drain. And notice — the water that's always sitting in the bowl? It rises exactly to the top of that weir. Hold onto that, it's the whole secret.
Now watch what happens when you flush. The tank dumps a huge slug of water into the bowl, all at once. The bowl level shoots up super fast — and the second it spills over the weir, water rushes down the back of the pipe and fills the whole trapway with no air gap. That's called priming the siphon. Now the trick is loaded. Watch what happens next.
Okay, here's the wow part. As water rushes down the back leg of the trapway, it leaves behind an empty space at the top — a kind of vacuum, where there's almost no air. And outside, the air is pushing down on the bowl water all the time. We just don't notice. So that air pressure shoves the bowl water UP and over the weir to fill the empty space in. The toilet isn't really sucking. The atmosphere is doing the pushing.

Once the bowl is empty, the tank above gets to work refilling itself. There's a little floating ball inside — as the water comes up, the ball rises with it. When the ball hits the top, it shuts the valve off. That whole setup is why a toilet is always ready to go, without you doing anything.
