Think about your jacket for a second. You grab that tiny little tab, pull it up, and a whole row of metal teeth snaps together in a perfect line. Pull it back down — they all come apart again. How does one little piece of metal do all that? It feels like magic, right?

Let's zoom in really close on those teeth. See, they're not just little rectangles — each tooth has a bulby head on the end and a gap right beside it. When the zipper closes, the head from the top row tucks perfectly into the gap on the bottom row. And the bottom row's head tucks into the top row's gap. They hold onto each other.

Okay, here's the real trick. The slider — that little metal piece you pull — isn't solid. Look at it from above. Inside there's a Y-shaped tunnel. Two openings on one side, one opening on the other. That tunnel is the whole secret to how a zipper works.

Watch what happens when you zip up. The slider walks along the zipper, and the separated teeth feed into those two openings at the bottom. The walls of the Y-channel squeeze them together — like a funnel — and by the time they pop out the top, they're already interlocked. The slider's not doing magic. It's just bending them at exactly the right angle.

Okay, your turn — try it yourself. Drag the slider back and forth and watch the teeth click together and pop apart. Then flip to cross-section view, and you can actually see the Y-channel squeezing those teeth together.

Now what about going down — un-zipping? Here's the cool part. The slider doesn't change shape. The teeth don't change shape. Pull it the other way and that same Y-channel, with that little wedge in the middle, pries the locked teeth apart. They go in interlocked and come out separated. Same shape, reverse direction. That's it.

So here's the whole picture. You've got teeth shaped like little hooks. You've got a metal Y-channel that bends them at exactly the right angle. And you've got your hand, pulling. That's it. That's the whole zipper. It's not magic — it's just geometry, doing the same trick a hundred times in a row.
