Look up at the sky for a second. See those big puffy cotton-looking clouds? Here's something weird — they're actually made of WATER. Like, the same water that comes out of your tap. So if they're water, why don't they fall down on you? Why don't they look wet? And how did they get all the way up there in the first place?
Here's the first secret. The air around you, right now, has water in it — but it's invisible. We call it water vapor. Warm air can hold a LOT of water. Cool air can only hold a little. That's why a cold glass of lemonade on a hot day gets all sweaty on the outside — the warm air bumps into the cold glass and the water it was carrying just… plops out.
Now here's how a cloud is actually born. The sun heats up the ground, and that warms the air sitting on top of it. Warm air rises — that's just what warm air does. But here's the catch: the higher up you go, the colder it gets. So as that warm air climbs, it cools off, and at some point it just can't hold all its water anymore. The extra water pops out as tiny droplets you can finally see. Boom — cloud.
Okay, here's the part that blows kids' minds. If you could zoom in on a cloud, you'd see it's actually made of trillions of teeny tiny water droplets. Each one is so small — about a hundredth of a millimeter — that the air just holds it up, like dust floating in a sunbeam. All those microscopic droplets together is what makes that big white fluffy shape you see from down here.
Your turn. This jar is filled with air. You control how WARM the air is, and how much WATER it's carrying. Get it humid, then cool it down past the dew point — that's the temperature where the air gives up and starts condensing. Watch what happens inside the jar.
Quick tour — clouds come in different shapes depending on how high they are and how the air's behaving. Down low you get cumulus — those fluffy cotton-ball clouds on a nice day. A bit higher and flatter, that's stratus — like a grey sheet that drizzles. Way up high, you get cirrus — thin wispy streaks. Those are so high and cold they're actually made of ice crystals, not droplets.
So that's the whole story. A cloud is just water doing its laundry in the sky. Sun warms the ground, warm moist air rises, it cools off as it climbs, the water inside it condenses into trillions of microscopic droplets, and those droplets float together as a cloud. Same trick — every single time you look up.
