You see the flash first. Always. Then — a beat later — the BOOM rolls in. Why does it land in that order? Why never the other way around?

Inside a thundercloud it's chaos. Trillions of ice crystals and water droplets are crashing into each other nonstop. The crashes shuffle tiny electric charges — positive bits drift to the top of the cloud, negative bits pile up on the bottom. Same exact trick as the doorknob zap from earlier. Just… way, way bigger.

Eventually the gap between cloud and ground gets too big to hold. A faint zigzag finger of charge starts feeling its way down from the cloud — that's called a stepped leader. At the same time, the ground reaches UP toward it with a streamer. The instant they touch, the whole channel slams shut with a flash of light.

Now — where does the boom come from? When the bolt fires, it heats the air around it to thirty thousand degrees Celsius. That's about five times hotter than the surface of the sun. Air that hot doesn't just sit there — it explodes outward as a shockwave. When that shockwave reaches your ears, you hear thunder. Thunder is literally the air itself screaming.

Your turn — and this one is a real-world skill. Pick how far away the storm is. Hit STRIKE. Light shows up instantly, but sound takes time — about three seconds per kilometer. Count the gap and you know the distance.

Lightning is dramatic but most of it is avoidable. Inside a building, you're safe. In a car, you're also safe — the metal shell acts like a cage that shunts the charge around the outside. Avoid being the tallest thing around, and stay out of the water during a storm. Fun fact — the Empire State Building gets struck about 25 times every year, and nobody inside notices.

So that's the whole thing. Inside the cloud, charge piles up. When the gap snaps, lightning leaps. The air around the bolt explodes outward, and that boom rolls back to you as thunder. Lightning is the doorknob zap — just the size of a mountain.
