Okay, so you've heard about the four kinds of AI. There's one that everyone's buzzing about right now — the creator. Its real name is Generative AI. But everybody just calls it GenAI. Way easier to say.
Here's the simple idea. GenAI makes brand new stuff. Watch — stories, pictures, songs, even computer code. None of it existed five seconds ago. You ask, and poof, it shows up.
Let's try one. You type, write me a poem about Mars — and look, here comes a poem. Nobody wrote this before. The AI just made it up, right now, for you. Pretty wild, right?
But wait — where does that poem actually come from? It's not pulled from some giant library of pre-written poems. There's no secret stash. It's built fresh, from patterns the AI picked up by reading tons and tons of stuff.
Here's the secret trick. At every step, the AI just picks what's most likely to come next. Watch — one word, then the next, then the next. That's it. And the same idea works for pixels in pictures, notes in music, even letters in code.
You've probably heard of some of these. ChatGPT and Claude write text. Midjourney and DALL-E make images. Suno makes music. Copilot writes code. Different jobs — but underneath, they're all doing that same pick-the-next-piece trick.
Okay, your turn to play. Pick any of these prompts down here — a poem, a picture, a song, some code. Then tap generate and see what pops out. Try a few. They're all built the same way.
Now here's the really important bit. GenAI doesn't actually know things. It just guesses what sounds right. [pause:400] And sounding right is not the same as being right. When the AI confidently makes stuff up, we call that a hallucination.
So how should you use it? Treat GenAI like a clever friend who's a bit of a show-off. Great for first drafts, brainstorming, getting unstuck. But anything that really matters? Double-check it yourself. Trust, but verify.
Quick recap. GenAI is the creator kind of AI. It builds new things from patterns it learned. It works by picking the most likely next bit, over and over. And remember — what sounds true and what is true are not the same thing.
Coming up next, we'll zoom in on two famous GenAIs. One of them actually turns random noise into a real picture — sounds impossible, you'll see. The other builds whole stories, one word at a time. Let's go.
