You know the eight planets. But the solar system has way more stuff than just planets. Tens of thousands of smaller things — rocks, icy snowballs, all kinds of leftover bits from when the solar system was forming four and a half billion years ago. And they come in two very different flavors.
Most asteroids live in a wide doughnut-shaped region called the asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter. Now — Hollywood lies. The belt is NOT crowded. Spacecraft fly through it without ever getting close to a rock. The biggest one, Ceres, is so big it's actually classified as a dwarf planet. And you might wonder — why didn't a real planet form here? The answer is Jupiter. Its gravity keeps stirring everything up, so the chunks never get a chance to stick together.
Comets are different. They come from way out in the cold, dark edges of the solar system. There's the Kuiper Belt, just past Neptune — short-period comets come from the Kuiper Belt and the scattered disc out there. And then there's the Oort Cloud, a giant spherical shell of trillions of icy bodies, about fifty thousand times farther from the sun than we are — that's where long-period comets come from. Comets fall in from these regions, swing close to the sun, and head right back out — orbits that take decades, centuries, or thousands of years.
Now here's the part most people get wrong. Watch what happens as a comet flies around the sun. [pause:300] You'd think the tail would trail behind it, like a jet's exhaust. It doesn't. The sun blasts out a constant stream of particles called solar wind, and that wind pushes the comet's gas and dust AWAY from the sun. So the tail always points away from the sun. Even when the comet is heading back out — its tail is still pointing the other way, BEHIND it then. Pretty wild.
Okay your turn. Drag the comet around its orbit. Watch two things — how the tail grows brighter as it gets near the sun, and how the tail always points away from the sun. Always. Try Halley's, then try Hale-Bopp which has a way longer orbit.
Most of the time, asteroids and comets just orbit quietly. But sometimes one hits Earth. Sixty-six million years ago a chunk about ten kilometers across slammed into what's now Mexico — and that's the impact that killed the dinosaurs. In 1908, a much smaller one exploded over Siberia and flattened two thousand square kilometers of forest. Nobody was hurt because it was empty wilderness. The good news? In 2022, NASA's DART spacecraft actually crashed into an asteroid on purpose and nudged its orbit. We're getting pretty good at watching for the dangerous ones.
So that's the whole picture. Two kinds of leftovers from when the solar system formed four and a half billion years ago. Asteroids — rocky, dull, mostly in the belt between Mars and Jupiter. Comets — icy, bright, with tails pointing away from the sun, swinging in from the outer edges. Same age as everything else out there. Same neighborhood. Just totally different stuff.
