Look at a regular wall switch. You flick it up — click — and a lightbulb across the room turns on. Instantly. Something just zipped through the wire from the wall to that bulb. Something you can't see. What in the world is it?
Let's zoom way, way in on the wire itself. Copper looks solid, but it's actually a grid of atoms — and each one has a couple of loose electrons just floating around. Now connect a battery, and those electrons all start drifting the same direction. THAT drift is electricity. That's it.
Now here's the secret that unlocks ALL of electricity. An electric circuit works exactly — and I mean exactly — like water in a plumbing system. The battery is a pump. Voltage is water pressure. Current is the flow rate. And resistance is just how narrow the pipe is. Same idea. Same math. Forever.
Okay, so the units. Volts measure pressure — how hard the battery is pushing. A AAA is one-point-five volts, gentle. A wall outlet is a hundred and twenty volts — that one will get you. A power line is ten thousand. Amps measure the flow rate — how many electrons are passing every second. And ohms measure resistance — how skinny the pipe is.
Your turn. There's a battery, a resistor, and a bulb in this circuit. Crank the voltage up and watch the current jump — the bulb glows brighter. Make the resistance smaller and the same thing happens. But push too hard and POOF — the bulb burns out. See if you can find the sweet spot.
Quick payoff. Go look at the cord on your phone charger — pretty skinny, right? Now look at the cord behind a microwave. Thick. That's because the microwave pulls a LOT more current. Skinny wire would overheat. More current always needs a thicker wire. Same way more water needs a wider pipe.
So that's the whole picture. Volts push, amps flow, ohms resist. Electricity isn't magic — it's literally just electrons running through a wire the same way water runs through a pipe. Once you see that, every electronics thing you ever learn will click.
