Watch this — kid takes a bite of an apple. That apple, in a couple of days, is literally going to BECOME this kid. Cells. Muscle fibers. Hair. Bone. Energy to run around. How does a piece of fruit turn into a whole person?

Step one happens before you even swallow. Teeth crush the food into smaller bits — that's mechanical. But your saliva isn't just water — it's packed with an enzyme called amylase, which starts breaking starches into sugar. That's why a saltine cracker tastes a little sweet if you hold it on your tongue.

Now you swallow. The food slides into a long tube called the esophagus. Your muscles squeeze in waves — that's called peristalsis — and they actually push the food down. It's not falling. Which is why you can drink water hanging upside-down, and why astronauts in zero gravity can eat just fine.

Welcome to the stomach. This is a CHURNING acid bath. pH around 2 — that's stronger than vinegar. The acid plus an enzyme called pepsin shreds proteins into smaller pieces and kills off most of the germs you swallowed. After a few hours of mashing, your food doesn't look like food anymore. It's a paste called chyme. And yes — your stomach lining is the one thing on Earth that doesn't get eaten by stomach acid.

Now the real magic happens. The small intestine is about six meters long — uncoiled, that's longer than a really tall basketball player laid flat on the floor. And its walls aren't smooth — they're covered in millions of tiny finger-like things called villi. All those bumps make the inside surface as big as a tennis court. That's where the nutrients — sugars, amino acids, fats — actually slip into your blood.

Okay, your meal's on the menu. Pick something to eat, press the button, and watch the food make its way through. Pause whenever you want to see what's happening at a stage. Notice how MOST of the nutrients only come out in the small intestine.

So here's the whole tour. Mouth, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, exit. About nine meters of pipe, running 24 hours a day, taking food apart all the way down to single molecules — and rebuilding YOU out of the pieces. Every bite, every day. Pretty wild.
