Quick test — when you picture a skeleton, what do you see? Probably a dry rattly thing from a Halloween cartoon. Here's the spoiler: your bones are nothing like that. They're alive. They grow, they heal themselves, they make your blood, and they store stuff your body needs. Bones are doing actual jobs right now.
How many bones do you have? Two hundred and six. But here's a wild bit — babies have around two hundred and seventy. They lose bones as they grow. Not because the bones disappear, but because separate baby bones fuse together into one. Your skull was a bunch of plates that grew shut by the time you were two years old.
Time to slice one open. From the outside in: a thin skin called periosteum. Then compact bone — dense and rigid, where the strength comes from. Then spongy bone, which actually looks like a honeycomb — full of tiny holes so it's super light but still strong. And at the very center: marrow. That red stuff is making your blood right now.
Bones can't bend — they're rigid. So how do you move? At joints. Where two bones meet, they connect with one of four designs. Hinge joints, like your elbow and knee — they swing one direction, like a door. Ball-and-socket joints, like your shoulder and hip — those rotate any direction. Pivot joints let you turn your head. And gliding joints, like in your wrist, slide past each other for tiny motions.
Okay, your turn. Pick any joint, then bend it with the slider. Try this: bend the right knee, then try to push it past straight. Feel how it stops? That's a hinge — it only goes one direction. Now try the shoulder. It goes everywhere. Try the pose buttons too — sit, run, wave.
Last weird truth: if you break a bone, the bone itself fixes it. Cells called osteoclasts show up and chew up the broken pieces like little Pac-Men. Then osteoblasts — the builders — lay down brand new bone in the gap. After a few weeks the break is gone. That's why doctors put broken bones in a cast: not to heal them, just to hold them still while the bone heals itself.
So here's the whole picture. Two hundred and six bones. All of them living tissue, all of them rebuilding themselves every single day. Your skeleton holds you up, makes your blood, stores calcium, and fixes itself when it breaks. Pretty good, for a Halloween prop.
