Put your hand on your chest for a second. Feel that? THUMP-thump. THUMP-thump. That's been happening every single second of your life — even while you were still inside your mom. It will do it about a hundred thousand times today. And it never, ever takes a break.

Now here's the wild part. If you sliced your heart open and looked inside, you'd see it isn't one pump — it's two. Glued back to back. The right half sends tired, bluish blood up to your lungs to grab oxygen. The left half — the strong one — fires that fresh red blood out to the rest of your body.

Let's follow one drop of blood. It comes back tired and blue from your toes — into the right side of your heart, up to your lungs, picks up oxygen, turns bright red. Then back down into the left side, and BAM — fired out to your brain, your fingertips, everywhere. It drops off the oxygen, turns blue again, and the whole loop starts over.

Zoom in even closer. Inside, there are four little rooms — called chambers — and four little doors called valves. Every beat, the rooms squeeze and the doors slam shut so blood can only go one way. That slamming — THUMP-thump — that's actually the sound of valves closing. Your heartbeat is the sound of doors.

Okay, your turn. Slide the activity from sleeping all the way up to sprinting. Watch the BPM climb, watch the heart pump faster, and check the blood flow number — your heart can pump five times more blood per minute when you push it. That's why running feels hard.

Quick health check. Your heart loves three things: exercise, because it's a muscle and muscles get stronger when you use them; water and good food; and enough sleep. What it hates: smoking, way too much salt and sugar, and just sitting still all day. You only ever get one heart. Be nice to it.

So here's the whole picture. Two pumps. Four chambers. About a hundred thousand beats a day, every day, your entire life. It's the most important muscle in your body, and it has never, ever taken a break. It's beating right now. Pretty amazing, right?
