Right now, while you're reading this, something INCREDIBLE is happening inside your skull. Eighty-six BILLION tiny cells are firing electrical pulses at each other. Every thought you've ever had, every memory, every feeling — all of it. Just cells. Talking. We call them neurons. Let's meet one.
Here's one neuron, up close. It looks like a tree, right? On the left, those branchy bits are called dendrites — that's how it receives messages. The blob in the middle is the cell body, with the nucleus inside. And that long cable stretching off to the right? That's the axon — its one long output wire, ending in more little branches.
When a neuron fires, it sends an electrical pulse. Sodium atoms rush IN through tiny doors, the cell body flashes, and that pulse RACES down the axon at about a hundred meters per second. Faster than a car. Slower than light. Just fast enough to think a thought.
Here's the wild bit — neurons don't actually touch each other. There's a tiny gap between them called a synapse. When the electric pulse reaches the end of the axon, it can't jump the gap. Instead, the neuron releases chemical messengers — neurotransmitters — that drift across, bind to the next neuron's dendrite, and tell IT to fire. Electric. Then chemical. Then electric again.
Okay, your turn. Here are six neurons wired together. Click any one to fire it and watch the signal cascade. Some connections are strong — they'll pass the signal on. Others are weak — those fizzle out. You can even change the weight of any connection, exactly like AI does with its artificial neurons.
Now here's the cool part. Way back in the 1950s, engineers looked at how YOUR neurons work and thought — what if we built a math version of that? So they did. They called it an artificial neuron. Inputs go in, each gets a weight, the cell adds them up, and if the total is big enough, it fires an output. Stack millions of these in a network, and you get AI. The thing thinking in your head and the thing making your phone recognize faces — same blueprint.
So that's the whole thing. Inputs come in through the dendrites. The cell body adds them up and decides to fire. The pulse races down the axon. The terminals talk to the next neuron. Multiply that by eighty-six billion, all wired together, all firing right now. You're made of trees that talk to each other. And that's where every thought you've ever had came from.
