On a really dark night, far from city lights, you can sometimes see a faint white smear across the sky. People have always called it the Milky Way. Here's the wild part — that smear is OUR galaxy, seen from the inside, edge-on. We're not looking AT it. We're looking THROUGH it. Every single star you can see with just your eyes is a neighbor, inside our same galaxy.

So what is a galaxy, really? It's a huge family of stars — about 200 billion of them in ours — all held together by gravity. They're not stuck still — the whole thing slowly rotates, like a giant pinwheel. If you pull the camera back from our solar system far enough, our sun shrinks to one tiny dot, then disappears into a sea of dots, and you start to see the spiral shape we live inside.

Try to picture how big our galaxy is. It's 100,000 light-YEARS across. That means light — the fastest thing in the universe — needs 100,000 years just to travel from one edge to the other. Our Sun, with us riding along, takes about 230 million years to make one lap around the center. The last time we were here in our orbit, dinosaurs were still around.

Galaxies aren't all the same shape. There are three main types. Spirals — pinwheels with curving arms — that's us, that's Andromeda. Ellipticals — smooth football-shaped blobs, mostly very old stars. And irregulars — clumpy, lopsided messes, usually because two galaxies smashed together and disturbed each other.

The Milky Way and Andromeda are part of a 'Local Group' of about 50 galaxies. Local groups gather into clusters, clusters into superclusters, and superclusters form a tangled cosmic web stretching across everything.

So here's the whole picture in three zooms. A star — one sun, like ours. A galaxy — about two hundred billion stars, like our Milky Way. A universe — about two trillion galaxies. You live on a planet, around one star, in one arm of one galaxy, in one corner of a universe of trillions. That is your address.
