Let's peek inside the wheel and see what's actually there. Spinning along with the wheel is a steel disc — they call that the rotor. Around it, like a C-shaped clamp, sits the caliper. And tucked inside the clamp are two small brass pads. When you press the pedal, fluid in a tube pushes those pads together, and they pinch the spinning disc.
Here's the big idea — the one nobody tells you. The car's motion is a kind of energy, and energy can't be destroyed. When the pads grip the spinning disc, friction converts that motion into heat. Same energy. Different form. And if you brake really hard, the disc actually starts glowing red-orange — like a stove burner. That glow is your car's motion, leaving the world.

Electric cars have a really clever trick. The motor that pushes the wheels can also be run backwards — when the wheels spin it, it makes electricity. So when you let off the gas, the wheels actually charge the battery. You're not throwing your motion away as heat anymore. You're saving it. That's regenerative braking.
