Okay, quick test. Remember this number — seven, two, nine, three, four, one, eight. Got it? Now without looking, can you say it backwards? Yeah, that's HARD. Your brain just used something we call memory. But what actually IS that?
Memory isn't one thing — it's three. First, sensory memory: everything your eyes and ears just took in, held for less than a second. Most of it vanishes. A tiny bit makes it into short-term memory — only about thirty seconds long, and only seven items at a time. That phone number? Pure short-term. If you really pay attention, some of it crosses the bridge into long-term memory, which can last a lifetime.
So how does a memory actually GET in there? Here's the rule scientists figured out: neurons that fire together, wire together. When two cells happen to fire at the same time, the connection between them — the synapse — gets a tiny bit stronger. Do that again, stronger. And again, stronger. After enough repeats, those two cells are basically a team — fire one, the other fires too. THAT is a memory.
Different kinds of memory live in different parts of your brain. There's a tiny seahorse-shaped thing deep inside, called the hippocampus — that's where new facts and events first get saved. Riding a bike or playing guitar? Those skills go into your cerebellum, the crinkly bit at the back. And when you sleep at night, your brain takes the day's memories and quietly moves them out of the hippocampus into the rest of the cortex for long-term storage. That's why sleep matters.

They're not recordings — they're stories you keep re-telling yourself.
So here's the whole thing. Memory is just neurons firing together, wiring together, getting stronger links. Your memory isn't a tape and it isn't a hard drive. It's a forest of connections in your head. And the more you walk down a path, the wider it gets. That's why practice works. That's why we forget. That's why you are who you are.
