You've probably seen a river before — but have you seen one from above? Take a look. It's not a straight line. It twists. It curls back on itself. It gathers up smaller streams and then spreads out into a fan at the end. Here's the big question: where does all that water start? And where does it go? Every river has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Today we'll trace one from top to bottom.
Every river starts up high. Way up at the top of a mountain, snow melts in the sun and rain drops out of the sky. The water can't sit still — it trickles downhill in tiny streams. Those streams bump into each other, join up, and grow. The place where a river is born is called the headwaters. So a river doesn't really pop out of one spot — it's hundreds of little trickles finding each other on the way down.
Why does a river always go downhill? One word — gravity. Every drop of water gets pulled toward the lowest spot it can possibly reach. Look at the side view. The mountain is high, the sea is low, and the river just falls through all the in-between. The bigger the height drop, the faster the water moves and the more rock it can grind down. So gravity isn't just pulling water — it's also doing the carving.
Once the river hits flat land, something weird happens — it stops going in a straight line. It bends. We call those bends meanders. Here's why. On the outside of a curve, the water moves faster, and it chews into the bank like a saw. On the inside, the water moves slowly, so the sand and mud it was carrying just drop out. So a meander widens on one side, fills in on the other, and slowly the whole bend creeps sideways across the land.
Now watch a meander get a little too greedy. The bend gets tighter and tighter, year after year. Eventually the river just takes a shortcut straight across the neck of the loop. The old curve gets cut off — and there it is, sitting all by itself, a curved little lake shaped like a horseshoe. We call it an oxbow lake. The Mississippi has tons of them. So does the Amazon. They're like fossil rivers — the leftover shape of a meander the main river abandoned.

The river always finds its way downhill — straight where the slope is steep, looping on the flats, and fanning out into a delta where it finally meets the sea. Try a high source. Try a low one. See how the path changes.
