Look at this thing. A real rocket is the height of a thirty-story building, and it weighs more than a hundred elephants. How does something that heavy leap off the ground? And — bigger mystery — how does it keep going once it's in space, where there's no air, no ground, nothing around to push against?

Before we crack the rocket, remember this — every push has a twin going the other way, same size. We saw this with kids pushing walls and swimmers pushing water. Here's a cleaner version. A kid on a skateboard throws a heavy ball forward. The ball flies out — and the kid rolls backward. The kid pushed the ball; the ball pushed the kid right back. Hold that picture.

Now scale it up. Instead of throwing a ball, a rocket throws hot exhaust gas. Burning fuel turns into expanding gas, and the engine shoves that gas downward at thousands of miles an hour. By Newton's 3rd, that gas pushes the rocket back, just as hard — and that push is what lifts it. The rocket isn't pushing on the launch pad. It's pushing on its own exhaust.

Now the wild part. Planes can't fly in space — their wings need air. But rockets keep working in a total vacuum. Why? Because a rocket doesn't push against the air. It pushes against its own exhaust. The fuel is on board, the gas is on board, the handshake happens between rocket and gas. Space doesn't get a vote.

Your turn. Set how much fuel you want, set how hard the engine fires, then launch. Watch the altitude. When fuel runs out, you'll start to fall — unless you hit STAGE to drop the empty tank. Once the empty tank is gone, the rocket is lighter and the next stage's engine kicks in. Try to reach space.

Real rockets are basically flying fuel tanks — like ninety percent of the weight is fuel. Once you burn a tank empty, dragging it along is wasting your push. So we drop it. The Saturn V had three stages. First stage burns, falls away. Second stage fires, falls away. Third stage carries the capsule the rest of the way. Each stage gets lighter and lighter, and goes higher and higher.

So here's the whole picture. Burn the fuel — that makes hot gas. Throw the gas down through the nozzle, fast and hard. Newton's 3rd does the rest, and the rocket goes up. A rocket is Newton's third law made of fire. Same handshake that lets you walk. Just way, way bigger.
