Make a fist right now. Squeeze. Feel your bicep pop up? Look at that bulge. Most people think a muscle 'pushes' the arm into that pose. But here's the thing — muscles can't push. Not even a little. So what just happened?

Here's a single muscle attached to a bone with that tough white-ish strap — a tendon. Watch what happens when it fires. It gets shorter. And fatter. It pulls the bone toward it. When it relaxes, it just goes long again — passively. It can never push the bone back the other way. So how on earth do you straighten your arm?

Here's the trick — you need TWO muscles. The bicep on the front pulls your forearm up. To straighten back out, a different muscle takes over: the tricep, on the back of your arm, pulls the forearm down. They're called an antagonistic pair. They take turns. Every push you think you're making is actually a pull from the opposite muscle.

Now let's zoom in until we're inside the muscle itself. A muscle is bundles of fibers, and each fiber is bundles of myofibrils, and each myofibril is made of these repeating little units called sarcomeres. Inside each sarcomere, two kinds of filaments overlap — actin and myosin. When a nerve fires, tiny myosin heads RATCHET along the actin, pulling everything closer together. The sarcomere shortens. Multiply that by trillions, and your whole muscle contracts.

Okay, your turn. You're now in charge of both muscles. Slide the bicep up — feel the arm bend. Drop the bicep, raise the tricep — it straightens. Now try cranking BOTH up to 100%. Notice what happens. The arm locks. That's co-contraction. It's why your jaw can clench but your arm still can't push. When you're ready, hit 'reach for apple' and try to coordinate the pair to grab it.

Quick tour of the three muscle types. Skeletal — striped, attached to bones, you control it on purpose. Cardiac — only in your heart, also striped, but you don't control it, and crazy fact, it never gets tired. Smooth — inside your stomach, your gut, your blood vessels. No stripes. Slow. Automatic. You'd be dead without it, but you've never thought about it once.

So that's the whole story. Muscles can only pull. So we have pairs — one to bend, one to straighten. And inside each muscle, a tiny molecular ratchet shortens it by a few nanometers, trillions of times at once. Pair, pull, ratchet. That's every blink, every step, every heartbeat you'll ever have.
