Look up on a clear night and you might spot one — a tiny dot, sliding silently across the stars. It's a satellite. And it is not alone. Right now, more than ten thousand working satellites are circling our planet, with thousands of broken ones drifting alongside them. Let's see them all at once.

But what actually IS one of these dots? Let's zoom in. A satellite is a robot, built to live in space. These wide wings are solar panels — they drink in sunlight and turn it into electricity. This dish is its antenna, aimed at Earth to send and receive signals — pictures, phone calls, the internet. And tucked in the middle are its instruments — maybe a camera, a telescope, or a radio. Every dot you'll see is a machine like this, doing a job for someone down on Earth.

Most of them live down here, in Low Earth Orbit — a busy shell just a few hundred kilometres up. Down this low they have to move incredibly fast to keep from falling — about eight kilometres every second. That's so fast they loop all the way around the whole planet in about ninety minutes. A sunrise every hour and a half.

The biggest one of all is right here in Low Earth Orbit — the International Space Station. It's as long as a football field, and people actually live inside it, floating, doing science, for months at a time. It circles Earth sixteen times every single day.

And we keep adding more. Companies are launching whole fleets of small satellites — like Starlink — thousands of them, flying in long lines we call trains. Working together, they can beam internet down to almost anywhere on Earth, even the middle of the ocean.

Some satellites take a special path — straight over the North and South Poles. As they loop pole to pole, the Earth spins underneath them, so over a day they get to scan every single part of the planet. These are the ones watching the weather, mapping the land, and tracking storms and forests.

Let's climb higher — twenty thousand kilometres up. Out here is a ring of navigation satellites, like GPS. Your phone listens to several of them at once, and from their signals it works out exactly where you're standing, anywhere on Earth. Every map and direction you've ever followed started up here.

But the strangest orbit of all is way out here — thirty-six thousand kilometres up. At this exact height, a satellite circles Earth in precisely one day — the same time it takes Earth to spin once. So from the ground, it looks like it's frozen in the sky, hovering over the same spot forever. That's how a TV dish can point at one fixed place and never move again. We call it geostationary.

Put it all together, and this is our planet today. Thousands of working satellites, in shells from a few hundred to thirty-six thousand kilometres up — plus millions of tiny pieces of broken junk, all racing around at thousands of kilometres an hour. An invisible, electric web of machines, wrapped around the world — quietly running the maps, the weather, the calls, and the internet of everyone down below.
