Watch this kid bouncing. Every time they come down, they fly back up — sometimes higher than before. But look at their legs — they're not doing some huge jumping motion. So where is all that extra height coming from? Something is helping them, and it isn't magic.
Here's the trick that explains it all. When something pushes on a spring, you're actually putting energy INTO the spring. It doesn't just vanish — the spring tucks that energy away, kind of like a savings account. Watch the coils squish — and watch the energy bar fill up at the same time.
And now the magic part — take the weight off. [pause:300] BOING! The spring snaps right back to its full length, and everything that was stored as squishy energy turns into motion energy. The stuff on top doesn't just sit there — it flies.
Springs have a beautifully simple rule. The more you squish, the harder they push you back. Squish a little, get a little push. Squish a lot, get a HUGE push. Scientists call it Hooke's law: force equals k times x. k is how stiff the spring is, x is how far you've squished it.
Okay, your turn to play rocket scientist. Pick how stiff the spring should be, choose how far to squish it down, and then hit LAUNCH. Try a soft spring with a big squish, then a stiff spring with a tiny squish — and see which one wins.
Once you know the trick, you'll start seeing springs everywhere. Your bed has hundreds. Your pen has a tiny one that clicks. Cars use giant ones to absorb bumps. A bouncy ball doesn't have a metal coil, but the rubber itself acts like a spring. Anything that bounces or snaps back is using this exact same energy-savings trick.
So here's the whole picture. Squeeze a spring, you deposit energy. Hold it, the energy sits there waiting. Let go, and all of it turns into motion. Trampolines, pogo sticks, bouncy balls — it's all the same trick. Springs are little energy savings accounts. And now you know how to use one.
