Okay, picture this. It's winter, you've just walked across the carpet in your socks, and you reach for the doorknob — ZAP. A tiny little electric shock. Why does that happen? Why doorknobs? Why winter? Why does it shock more some days than others?

Here's what's actually happening at the floor level. Every time your shoe brushes the carpet, it picks up these tiny things called electrons. Hundreds of them, every step. They jump from the carpet onto you, and they just sit there. Your whole body becomes negatively charged — covered in extra electrons with no place to go.

Now watch what happens when that charged-up hand gets near something metal. Your hand has thousands of extra electrons, all crammed together, repelling each other. The doorknob is neutral — empty of extras. When you get really close, the electrons can't stand it anymore. They jump across the air gap. That's the spark. That's the zap.

So why mostly in winter? One word again — humidity. In summer, the air is full of water, and water molecules pick up your extra charges as you walk. They get carried away. In winter the air is dry, and there's nothing to grab those electrons. So they pile up on you. Dry air is sticky for electrons.

Okay, your turn. Hit walk a few times to build up charge — see the kid's hair start standing up? Now slide the humidity around. When you're ready, touch the doorknob. Bigger charge = bigger spark. If you've leaked it all away, nothing happens.

A lightning bolt is doing the exact same thing. Up in a storm cloud, ice crystals and water droplets are jostling around in the wind, rubbing electrons off each other. The bottom of the cloud builds up a HUGE negative charge. The ground below goes positive. And when the charge gets big enough — CRACK. Lightning leaps from cloud to ground. Same trick as a doorknob. Just a million times bigger.

So here's the whole thing in three steps. Rub stuff together, charge builds up, and when there's enough — it leaps. Carpet to doorknob? That's the recipe. Thundercloud to ground? Same recipe. Static is really just lightning that hasn't grown up yet.
