Step outside on a clear evening, just after sunset. Sometimes you'll spot a bright dot moving across the sky in a perfectly straight line — way faster than any airplane, no blinking lights. That's the International Space Station. And there are seven people inside it. Right now. Doing science. While you're looking up at them.

Okay, the numbers. The ISS sits about four hundred kilometers above your head — that's roughly the distance from New York City to Washington, D.C., straight up. It's moving at twenty-eight thousand kilometers per hour. That's about thirty times faster than a passenger jet. One full lap around the Earth takes ninety minutes — which means the astronauts watch the sun rise sixteen times every day. And the whole thing, solar panels and all, is about the size of a football field.

Quick myth-buster. People think astronauts float because there's no gravity up there. That's wrong. At four hundred kilometers, gravity is still about ninety percent as strong as it is on the ground. So why do they float? Because they're falling. Constantly. The ISS is literally falling toward Earth all the time — but it's moving sideways so fast that the Earth's curved surface drops away beneath it at the exact same rate. They never hit. So everything inside feels weightless.

Time for a tour. The ISS is basically a giant kit, with parts built by twenty-three countries and bolted together in space over the last twenty-six years. Those huge solar panels — four acres of them — generate about a hundred and twenty kilowatts of power. The long horizontal beam is called the truss. The cylinder-shaped pieces in the middle are the modules — that's where people actually live and work. The U.S. lab is named Destiny, the Russian module is Zvezda, Japan's lab Kibo is the biggest, and Europe brought Columbus. And see that arm reaching out? That's Canadarm2 — the robot that catches arriving spaceships.

So what are seven people actually doing up there for six months at a time? Real science you literally can't do on the ground. Protein crystals grow more perfectly without gravity messing them up — that helps drug research. Fire burns in tiny blue spheres instead of pointy flames. Plants get confused about which way to grow. And the humans themselves are the experiment — what happens to bones, vision, and the immune system after months in weightlessness? Plus everyday life: two hours of exercise a day, sleeping strapped to the wall, and recycling almost every drop of water.

So that's the ISS. Four hundred kilometers up. Twenty-eight thousand kilometers an hour. Continuously crewed since November of two thousand — over two hundred and seventy humans from twenty-three countries, never once leaving the station empty. A laboratory in the sky. Always there. Always falling.
