V-Shape vs U-Shape Valleys
A river cuts a sharp V into the land. A glacier carves a wide U. Same valley name, different sculptor.

Look at these two valleys. Same word — "valley" — but the shapes are completely different. The one on the left comes to a sharp point at the bottom, like the letter V. The one on the right has a flat floor and tall walls, like the letter U. Same name. Same hole in the ground. So why don't they look anything alike? Because two totally different sculptors made them.
First up — the V-valley. This is the river kind. At the very bottom there's a river. Above it, the walls climb upward and outward, like a slice of pizza turned upside down. The whole thing comes to a sharp point where the river is. If you hiked down to the river, you'd have to scramble down a steep slope on both sides. That's a V-valley.
Here's the secret of the V. A river is narrow. It can only eat away at the rock it actually touches — a tiny channel at the very bottom. So why isn't the valley narrow too? Because as the river drops deeper, the walls above lose their support. Gravity pulls them in. Rocks tumble down. The river takes the rocks away. Slowly, the walls slope outward. River cuts down — gravity widens out. V-shape every time.
Now the U-valley. Same idea — a hole in the ground — but the shape is totally different. The floor is wide and flat, like a hallway. The walls go almost straight up on both sides. If you stood in the middle of a U-valley, you could walk around easily — it's a big open space. Yosemite Valley in California is a famous one. So is Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland. What made them like this?
Now the secret of the U. A glacier is not a river — it's a giant mass of ice, wide enough to fill the whole valley from wall to wall. As it slowly slides downhill, it grinds the entire floor flat, like a colossal sandpaper block. Boulders frozen into the bottom of the ice gouge into bedrock. It scrapes the walls back too. After thousands of years, the V-valley it started in has been flattened and widened — into a U.

So here's the whole story in one line. River — narrow tool — cuts a sharp V. Glacier — wide tool — grinds a flat-bottomed U. Next time you see a valley on a hike, look at its shape. A sharp point at the bottom? A river made that. A flat floor with steep walls? Ice once filled it, ages ago. The shape of the valley is the signature of whoever carved it.
