Most mountains just sit there forever. Boring rocks. But some mountains? They catch on FIRE. They blast rock thousands of feet into the air, and they turn the ground into glowing orange rivers. We call those volcanoes. So what's actually going on inside one?

Here's the first big secret. If you sliced Earth open like an orange, it wouldn't be solid rock — it'd be a layered onion. On the outside, there's a super thin shell called the crust. That's the part we walk on. Under it is the mantle, which is so hot it's kinda like really thick goo. Deeper still is the outer core — that's molten liquid metal. And right at the middle is the inner core, white-hot but so squeezed it's actually solid.

Now zoom way in on one tiny patch of crust. Down in the mantle, the rock is so hot it can flow — slowly, like cold honey. Where two pieces of crust pull apart, or where a hot plume punches up from deep down, that goopy rock — we call it MAGMA — squeezes up toward the surface. It pools in a big bubble under the ground called a magma chamber. And as more magma keeps coming in, the pressure inside that chamber climbs higher and higher.

Eventually the pressure inside that magma chamber pushes harder than the rock above it can hold. The rock cracks open like a soda bottle — and BOOM. Magma rockets up through a narrow tube called the vent, and shoots out the top. The instant it's above ground, we change its name. Down below it's magma. Up here, it's LAVA.

Now you're the volcanologist. Build up the pressure inside the chamber. Pick what kind of magma you want — runny like in Hawaii, or thick and gluey. Then when you're past sixty, hit ERUPT and watch what happens. Hint — try both kinds. The eruption looks completely different.

Volcanoes come in three main flavors, depending on what kind of magma they push out. Shield volcanoes are wide and gently sloped, like Mauna Loa in Hawaii. Their lava is runny so it spreads far before cooling. Stratovolcanoes are steep classic cones — Mt. Fuji, Mt. St. Helens — and their thicker magma makes them way more explosive. And cinder cones are little ones, built up from the chunks they themselves throw out.

So here's the whole picture. A volcano is just Earth's pressure-release valve. Deep inside, the mantle's hot. Magma rises into a chamber, pressure climbs, and eventually it cracks the lid and out it comes. Same trick, over and over, for billions of years. Every island you see in the ocean — most of them — were built exactly like this.
