Listen closely. A guitar string twangs. A speaker cone thumps. Your voice rumbles in your throat. All of them make sound — but what's the secret thing they ALL do? That's the question.
Here's the secret. Every single one of them vibrates — wiggles back and forth really fast. And when something wiggles, it bumps the air next to it. Those bumps squish the air, then let it spread out, then squish it again. That ripple of squishy-spreadout air spreading outward IS sound.
Now, sound needs SOMETHING to push on. Air is the usual stuff, and it carries sound at about seven hundred and seventy miles an hour. Through water? Three thousand four hundred. Through steel? Thirteen thousand. But in outer space, there's no air, no anything — so there's no sound at all. Nothing to push. Total silence.
Now check this out. If something vibrates SLOWLY, it makes a deep, low note — like a bass. If it vibrates FAST, you get a high, squeaky note — like a whistle. We measure those wiggles per second in something called Hertz. A bass note? Eighty wiggles a second. A high piano note? Two thousand. Same air — just moving at different speeds.
Okay, now it's your turn to push some air around. Drag the pitch slider and watch how fast the wave wiggles. Then crank the volume to make the wave bigger. Find a frequency too high for human ears, but watch the dog's ear range — you can mess with that too.
Same idea, different knob. Loudness isn't about how FAST the air wiggles — it's about how HARD. A whisper barely nudges the air. A rock concert is like a giant punching it. Past about eighty-five decibels, those pushes start damaging the tiny membrane inside your ear. So yeah — turn the volume DOWN.
So here's the whole picture. Something vibrates. That vibration squishes and spreads the air into a pressure wave. The wave races outward, slams into the tiny drum inside your ear, and your brain says — hey, sound. That's it. Sound is just air, getting pushed around.
