Look at the bottom of that picture. See that thin little ribbon of water? That tiny river cut the entire canyon you're looking at. From the rim down to the river is almost two kilometers of solid rock. And yet — a small river did it. How? That's the puzzle for today.
Here's the trick — water on its own can't really cut rock. Pour water on a stone, you get a wet stone. But a river is never just water. It picks up sand, gravel, little pebbles, and drags them along the bottom. THAT is the sandpaper. Millions of tiny grinding rocks, scraping the bedrock every second, every year, for millions of years. The river isn't the saw — the sediment IS.
Now look at the canyon walls. See all those horizontal stripes? Each stripe is a different rock layer, laid down at a different point in Earth's history. The layer at the top? Pretty young. The layer at the bottom? Could be over a billion years old. When the river cuts down, it's slicing through the entire history of that place — like cutting a stack of pancakes and seeing every layer at once.
Now watch what time does. Start with a flat plateau and a small river on top. Speed up time — one million years, two, three. Barely a scratch. Four. Five. The canyon starts to show. Six million years in, you've got the Grand Canyon. The river never changed. The rate of grinding never changed. The only thing that changed was TIME — and time, given enough of it, will move a mountain.
And it's not just one famous canyon. All over the planet, the same recipe runs: a river plus sediment plus time. The Grand Canyon in the US, almost 2 km deep. Fish River Canyon in Namibia, 550 m deep but 160 km long — second only to the Grand. Copper Canyon in Mexico — actually a system of six canyons, total length bigger than the Grand. Same river-as-sandpaper trick. Three different continents.

Every river is still writing it.
