Look up at the moon for a month and something weird happens. One night it's a full circle. A week later it's only half there. Then a little sliver. Then it vanishes. Does the moon pop pieces off itself? Does it actually change shape? Let's figure out what's really going on.

Here's the spoiler. The moon never changes shape. Not one tiny bit. It's a giant rock — about a quarter the size of Earth — and it's a sphere, just like a basketball. Always has been, always will be. So if the moon doesn't change… what does?

Here's the secret. The sun is incredibly bright, but it can only light up one side of the moon at a time. The half facing the sun is lit. The half facing away is in total shadow. Same thing happens to Earth, by the way — that's why we have day and night. Half of us is in sunlight, half is asleep in the dark. You might wonder, doesn't Earth block sunlight from reaching the moon? Almost never. The moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees, so most months the moon sits above or below Earth's shadow — and the sun's light gets to it just fine. When they DO line up perfectly, you get a lunar eclipse. But that's a story for another video.

And here is the big aha moment. The moon spends a month orbiting around Earth. As it goes around, our angle on it changes. When the moon is on the far side of Earth from the sun, we look straight at its lit face — full moon. When it's between us and the sun, we're staring at its dark face — new moon. Everywhere in between, we see a slice of the lit side. That's a phase.

Astronomers gave each slice a name. Eight of them total, one for every quarter of the orbit. If the lit part is growing — like the moon is getting fatter — that's WAXING. If it's shrinking, that's WANING. Just memorise those two words and you can name every phase.

So here's the whole thing. The moon doesn't change shape. The sun doesn't move. The only thing that changes is the angle from us, here on Earth, to the moon's lit half. Same moon. Same sun. Different view. That's a phase.
