Picture this. There's a plate of broccoli, carrots, peppers. Your grown-up is going "eat your vegetables." But why? What's actually IN there that your body can't get from a hamburger or some chocolate? Let's open up a vegetable and see what's hiding.
First, vitamins. Vitamins are tiny molecules your body literally cannot manufacture on its own. You have to EAT them. Vitamin A keeps your eyes working in dim light — that's the orange and red veggies. The B vitamins help you pull energy out of food — leafy greens. Vitamin C helps cuts heal and fights off germs — peppers and citrus. Vitamin D builds your bones, you get some from sunlight. Vitamin K helps your blood clot when you scrape your knee. Each one is like a different spark plug.
Next, minerals. These are actual chemical elements, like iron and calcium and zinc, that plants pull out of the soil. Your body uses them as building blocks. Iron goes into your red blood cells — that's what lets your blood carry oxygen. Calcium — almost all of it, ninety-nine percent — is locked up inside your bones and teeth. Zinc patches up wounds. Potassium keeps your heart beating in rhythm. And magnesium runs more than three hundred different chemical reactions inside you. Minerals are basically the steel and concrete your body is built out of.
Now here's the weirdest one. Fiber. Fiber is the stringy stuff in veggies that your body can't actually digest. But it's not useless. Two things happen. One, fiber is roughage — it keeps everything moving so you don't get backed up. Two — and this is wild — fiber is FOOD. For the hundred TRILLION friendly bacteria living in your gut. They ferment fiber into vitamins and signaling molecules that affect your mood, your immune system, even your weight. The gut bacteria are basically a hidden organ. And fiber is what keeps them happy.
Okay, your turn. You're going to build a meal. Tap ingredients to add them to the plate. The bars on the right show how much of each nutrient you're getting. The yellow tick is the target. Hit every target — without going over the sugar line — and you've made a balanced meal. You can switch between toddler, teen, and adult modes too. Try a few combos.
What happens when you skip these for a long time? Real diseases. No vitamin C and you get scurvy — your gums bleed, wounds stop healing. That used to kill sailors on long voyages before they figured out limes. No iron and you get anemia — tired all the time, pale, weak. No vitamin D and your bones literally bend — that's called rickets. These weren't rare problems. For most of history, missing vegetables made people SICK. Veggies aren't a chore. They're the reason your body works at all.
So that's why everyone keeps saying to eat your veggies. Four things bundled inside them. Vitamins — for chemistry. Minerals — for building. Fiber — to feed the gut bacteria. And phytochemicals — plant defense compounds that protect your cells too. Your body can't make any of these. They have to come in through your mouth. Veggies aren't a chore. They're the raw materials your body needs to BE a body.
