Watch yourself for a day. You wake up around the same time. You get hungry around lunch. You're sleepy at night. You don't need a clock to know any of that. Why? Because you ARE the clock. Your brain runs one. It's been ticking since before you were born.
Where does the clock live? Right here. In a tiny knot of about twenty thousand neurons called the suprachiasmatic nucleus — the SCN. It sits right above the spot where your two optic nerves cross. That position is no accident. The SCN watches the light coming in through your eyes, and tells every other clock in your body what time it is.
Here's the trick. Your eyes have special cells that aren't for seeing — they're just for telling the clock what time it is. Bright light hits them, they signal the SCN, and the SCN flips your body into DAY mode — alert, awake, cortisol rising. The lights go down, the SCN flips the switch the other way — releases a hormone called melatonin, and you start to feel sleepy. Light is the main thing that sets your clock.
Let's tour a single day inside you. At six AM, cortisol peaks — you're being pulled awake. Noon, peak alertness — best time for hard thinking. Two PM, alertness dips — siesta time, your body wants a break. Six PM, body temperature peaks — strongest, most coordinated time of day. Nine PM, melatonin starts to flow. Ten PM through six AM, deep sleep — your body rebuilds while your brain files memories. Every twenty-four hours. Every single day.
