You've seen fire your whole life. A candle on a cake. A campfire on a trip. The blue ring of a gas stove. We barely think about it. But here's a question — what IS fire? Is it a solid? A liquid? A gas? Trick question. It's a chemical reaction. One you can actually see happening.

Fire is picky. It needs three things at once to exist. Fuel — something that can burn, like wood or wax or gas. Oxygen — from the air. And heat — enough to get the reaction started. Take away any single one and the fire dies. That's the fire triangle. The three secrets to every flame, and to every way you put one out.

Let's zoom into a burning log. Wood is mostly carbon and hydrogen, locked up in long molecules. When it's hot enough, those atoms break loose and grab oxygen from the air. Carbon plus O₂ becomes CO₂. Hydrogen plus oxygen becomes water — which leaves as steam. And the energy that was stored in those wood bonds? It bursts out as heat and light. That bursting is the flame.

Look at a candle flame closely. It has zones. The tiny blue patch at the very base is the hottest part — about fourteen hundred degrees Celsius — where carbon is burning cleanly. The big yellow middle isn't burning gas — it's tiny soot particles glowing hot, like a lightbulb filament. That's called incandescence. The red and orange tips are the coolest part, where the soot is starting to escape as smoke. Same flame, different temperatures, three different colors.

Okay, your turn. There's a small fire here. Try each method. Water removes heat. Blanket and sand remove oxygen. Blowing removes heat too — but only for small things like a candle. And gasoline? Gasoline is fuel. The fire LOVES gasoline. Don't.

Big safety thing — not every fire wants water. Wood and paper fires? Water works fine. But gasoline floats on water and the burning fuel just spreads. You need foam. Electrical fires? Water conducts electricity — you could get shocked. You need CO₂. Metal fires need a special powder, because metal can react with water and get worse. The kind of fuel decides the cure.

Here's the whole picture. Fuel meets oxygen, given enough heat to get rolling. Atoms swap partners. Out comes CO₂, water vapor, heat, and light. That's fire. Not magic. Not a creature. Just chemistry happening fast enough that you can see it glow.
