Here's a weird one. An ice cube, a glass of water, and the steam puffing out of a kettle — they all look totally different, right? But they're literally the same molecule. H-two-O. Same two hydrogens, same one oxygen. So if it's the same stuff, what on Earth is changing?

Let's zoom WAY in. Look at the molecules themselves. In ice, they're locked together in a tight grid, just shaking in place. In water, they're still touching, but they're sliding around like dancers in a crowd. In steam, they're flying around with tons of empty space between them. Same molecules. Three totally different dances.

Here's the big idea — write this one down. Temperature is literally just how fast the molecules are moving. Heat something up and the molecules jiggle faster and faster until they break loose from each other. Cool it down and they slow back down and snap right back into formation. Heat equals motion. That's it.

Every flip between states has its own name. Solid to liquid? Melting. Liquid back to solid? Freezing. Liquid to gas? Boiling — or evaporating if it's slow. Gas back to liquid? Condensing — like fog on your bathroom mirror. And here's a weird one: some things skip liquid completely. Dry ice goes straight from solid to gas. That's called sublimation.

Okay, your turn. Grab the slider and crank the temperature up and down. Watch how the molecules change formation as you cross the melt and boil lines. Then try switching substances — gold melts at a thousand degrees, helium barely exists as a liquid, and CO2 doesn't even have one. Same rules, different numbers.

There's actually a fourth state of matter and it might be the most important one of all. Plasma. Take a gas and make it ridiculously hot, and the electrons literally rip off the atoms. You get a glowing soup of charged particles. The sun? Plasma. Lightning? Plasma. Neon signs and fluorescent bulbs? Plasma. Like 99% of all the visible stuff in the universe is in this state.

So here's the whole picture. Matter has four states. Solid — molecules vibrating in a tight grid. Liquid — molecules sliding past each other. Gas — molecules flying free with tons of space. And plasma — so hot the electrons fly off, like in the sun. Same atoms. Just different dance moves. Heat them up, they speed up. Cool them down, they snap back. That's all matter is doing, everywhere, all the time.
