Look around. Water is everywhere — the ocean, a glass on the table, an ice cube, the sweat on your forehead, even tears. It feels like the most normal stuff in the universe. But here's the secret — water is actually the weirdest molecule in all of chemistry. And without that weirdness, nothing on Earth would be alive.
Let's zoom in on a single water molecule. Two hydrogens, one oxygen. Most molecules are perfectly straight, like a tiny ruler. Water isn't. It's bent — the two hydrogens stick out at a 104.5 degree angle. And the oxygen is greedy. It pulls the electrons hard, so the oxygen side gets a tiny negative charge and the hydrogen side gets a tiny positive charge. That's called a polar molecule.
If every water molecule has a plus end and a minus end, that means it acts like a tiny magnet. So put a bunch of them together and the plus of one snaps onto the minus of another. They cling. That cling is called a hydrogen bond, and it's the secret behind every single weird thing water does. Trillions of these little magnets, all holding hands.
And that one sticky little quirk — polar molecules clinging — gives water five totally weird superpowers. One — surface tension, water with a skin you can walk on. Two — it dissolves more things than anything else on Earth. Three — it expands when it freezes, so ice floats. Four — it resists temperature change. Five — it can climb up trees, against gravity. All from one bent molecule.
