Look at these three things. Vinegar plus baking soda — fizz everywhere. Iron sitting out in the rain — rust. Pancake batter on a hot pan — golden pancake. In every case, you start with one thing and end with totally different stuff. That's not magic. That's a chemical reaction.

Here's the key difference. When ice melts, it's still H₂O molecules — just in a new form. When you cut paper, it's still paper. Those are physical changes. But when paper burns, those paper molecules tear apart and turn into ash, smoke, and gas. Different molecules entirely. That's chemistry.

Let's zoom way in and watch what actually happens. Two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule. The bonds holding the H-H pairs together snap. The double bond on the O₂ snaps too. Now all the atoms are loose. They reach for new partners — and they form two water molecules. Same four hydrogens, same two oxygens, totally new arrangement.

Here is the rule that runs all of chemistry. Atoms are never created or destroyed. They only rearrange. So in any reaction, if four hydrogens and two oxygens go in — then four hydrogens and two oxygens must come out. Count them on each side. They always match. That's why we balance chemical equations.

Okay, your turn. Pick a recipe — sodium and water, baking soda and vinegar, photosynthesis, any of them. Then hit REACT and watch the atoms split apart and snap back together into something completely new. Each one acts different. Some boom, some bubble, some glow green.

Reactions don't just rearrange atoms — they also trade energy. Some let energy OUT, like a campfire or a hand warmer or your body digesting lunch. Those are exothermic. Others suck energy IN — like a sports ice pack that gets cold when you squish it, or a plant pulling sunlight in to make sugar. Those are endothermic.

Here's the whole picture. Reactants come in. Bonds break, atoms shuffle, new bonds form. Products come out. Fire is doing it. Rust is doing it. Your dinner is doing it inside your stomach right now. Plants are doing it outside in the sun. Chemistry is just atoms changing partners — billions of times a second, everywhere.
