Take one tiny drop of water. Now zoom in — ten times. Way closer. A thousand times. Keep going — a billion times closer. Eventually you can't zoom in any further without breaking the water apart. What you're looking at is an ATOM. Everything you see — water, air, your hand — is made of these little pieces.
Let's look at the simplest atom there is — hydrogen. Right in the middle, there's a tiny dense clump called the nucleus. It has one proton in it — that's the red ball with a positive charge. And buzzing around the outside is a single electron — that little blue dot. The electron isn't really orbiting in a neat circle though — it's more like a fuzzy cloud where it could be anywhere at once.
Here's the part that breaks brains. An atom is almost entirely empty space. If the nucleus were the size of a marble in the middle of a giant stadium, the electrons would be tiny specks of dust way out near the seats. So why does a table feel solid? Why doesn't your hand pass right through? Because electrons repel each other — your hand's electrons push on the table's electrons, and they push back. That's what 'solid' actually feels like.
Now let's add stuff. Add a second proton to hydrogen — and just like that, it's a totally different element. Helium. The stuff in balloons that makes your voice squeaky. Add two neutrons for weight, two electrons to balance it out. Add four more protons and now you've got carbon — the building block of everything alive, including you. The number of protons IS the element's identity card.

Single atoms are great, but the real magic happens when they bond together. Two hydrogen atoms link up with one oxygen atom by sharing their electrons — and you've just made a water molecule, H two O. Different atoms in different combinations make literally everything else. Salt, sugar, plastic, your DNA, the air. It's all just atoms holding hands.
So that's the whole story. Protons plus neutrons make the nucleus. Electrons buzz around in a cloud. That's an atom. Different proton counts make different elements, and elements stick together to make molecules, and molecules stack up to make literally everything around you. Everything is atoms, just put together in clever ways.
