Look at these two things. A campfire — done in an hour. And a rusty old car — took twenty years. You'll never guess: it's the EXACT same chemical reaction. Atoms grabbing oxygen. Just one runs in seconds and the other runs in decades. Rust is slow fire.

Let's zoom in on a fence. A single iron atom. Oxygen molecules float over from the air. A drop of water lands. Now watch — electrons jump from the iron atom over to the oxygen. That's oxidation. The iron has been ROBBED of its electrons. What's left behind is iron oxide. Rust. Same chemistry as fire — just slower because the water is doing the work, not heat.

Now here's the surprise. Rust isn't just iron. Cut an apple, leave it out — it browns. That's polyphenols inside the apple oxidizing. Squeeze lemon on it to stop it. Silver gets tarnished — silver atoms losing electrons to sulfur in the air. Old pennies go GREEN — that's copper oxidizing. The Statue of Liberty is the same green. It used to be shiny copper. Same trick, different metal.

Why does fire happen in seconds but rust takes years? The chemistry is identical — atoms grab oxygen, electrons get yanked, energy releases. But the RATE changes everything. Heat speeds it up. Water speeds it up. More oxygen speeds it up. A catalyst speeds it up. Take any one of those away and you stretch the reaction over hours. Years. Or basically forever.

How do we FIGHT oxidation? With antioxidants — molecules that sacrifice THEIR OWN electrons so the food or metal doesn't lose any. In your body and your food, that's vitamin C, vitamin E, the polyphenols in berries and tea. They're basically electron donors. In engineering, antioxidants look different — paint on a bridge, zinc coating on a roof, chromium in stainless steel. Same job. Different uniform.

Here's the whole picture. Metal plus oxygen plus time equals oxidation. Whether it's a forest fire in two minutes or a rusty fence in twenty years — same atoms, same trick, just different clocks. Rust is slow fire. And that's the whole story.
